  1. This is actually the first cotton mill in the South, and more than likely the world, to be run entirely on hydroelectric power. It went on-line on November 1, 1897. The Portman-Shoals Power Plant was the first hydroelectric facility to produce high-voltage power without step-up transformers in the nation. Indeed, as far as is known, it was the first in the world.
